Pet Care Procedure

Care of Dogs in the Facility will include:

  1. Daily inspection: Visually assess the animal for symptoms of illness – listlessness, decreased appetite, etc.
  2. Daily feeding: Fresh food and water will be provided once a day. The old water will be dumped, the container rinsed thoroughly with non-toxic soap and water, and fresh, cool water provided. Food bowls will be emptied and washed daily and replaced with fresh food.
  3. Toileting: Dogs will be walked outside and toileted in area behind East Wing.
  4. Exercise: Outdoor exercise will be provided daily as weather permits.
  5. Baths: This will be done weekly or as needed.

This will be the responsibility of the Activities Department during weekdays, and Nursing Service when the Activities Department is closed. The Activities Director will set up a schedule that meets the needs of the individual animal and communicate to the Nursing Department what their responsibilities will be.

Care of Cats in the Facility will include:

  1. Daily inspection: Visually assess the animal for symptoms of illness – listlessness, decreased appetite, etc.
  2. Daily fresh water: The old water will be dumped, the container rinsed thoroughly with non-toxic soap and water, and fresh, cool water provided.
  3. Daily feeding: Food will be provided twice daily. The food bowl will be washed daily and fresh food provided.
  4. Toileting: Kitty litter will be scooped daily with a provided scoop placed in a garbage bag.  This will be disposed of in the garbage can in the dirty utility room. The litter boxes will be kept clean and in good repair. They will be thoroughly cleaned weekly in the soiled utility room after discarding all the litter in a garbage bag and disposing of it in the garbage can there. Gloves will be worn when working with the litter boxes and changed between boxes if there is more than one. New cleaning materials will be used as well and discarded after each box is cleaned.

Care of Birds in the Facility will include: 

  1. Daily inspection: Visually assess the animal for symptoms of illness, shivering, heavy breathing, listlessness, change in the color of droppings and ruffled feathers.
  2. Daily fresh water: The old water will be dumped, container rinsed thoroughly with non-toxicsoap and water, and fresh cool water provided.
